About the Event
WHAT'S GOING ON?
"A New World, Right Here in America" is a 52-week program consisting of an ongoing research study, weekly meetings and accountability practices for individuals who want to dismantle systemic oppression and white supremacy culture in their daily spaces. Founder and CEO, Nicole Johnson, and the Harriet Tubman Effect Institute seek to guide willing institutions, leaders, and community members toward ushering in a new world.
WHO IS IT FOR?
The program targets theater workers, lovers, makers, and producers, but also welcomes individuals who work in other sectors and/or cross-industry organizations. Tracks available for both marginalized people and white individuals who will work together, while prioritizing the support, education, and healing needed within individual communities.
HOW IS IT STRUCTURED?
"A New World" is a year-long participation in an ongoing research study, a space for like-minded community, a class, and an accountability practice. Throughout the year we will work through a resource book that explores your relationship to culture, power and compensation, with a focus on building community, leading with grace, self-assessment and reparations. The first New World Gathering will be on Friday September 16th from 7-8:30pm at which we will ask the cohort for their preferences for the day/time of our weekly meetings. We will ultimately settle on two 90-minute weekly meeting times, so each week you have two options to choose from. The program is designed for you to engage a minimum of 1x per week, and you can opt into additional sessions such as affinity groups, accountability partnerships, and research groups as you wish.
WHAT IF I HAVE TO MISS A WEEK? The New World program is designed for you to tap in and challenge yourself based on your own desire and commitment in any given week. Perfectionism is a white supremacy culture characteristic that we do not encourage in this work.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
The annual membership is priced at $700* Â and honors the liberation of the 700 enslaved people that Harriet Tubman led to freedom in the Combahee River Raid in 1863. Throughout the course of the year, participants will be encouraged to consider reallocating additional wealth, at four distinct moments during your experience. If you are able, you are encouraged to underwrite a membership to provide access to someone for whom the cost is prohibitive. Additionally, there are options to purchase memberships for multiple members of your company or professional community, or to set up a private year-long intensive for your team.
